When Constable Evan Evans is persuaded to join the local male choir for the upcoming eisteddfod (cultural festival), he doesn't think the addition of his mediocre voice will do them much good. In spite of all the effort that choirmaster Mostyn Phillips puts in to the choir, it is not exactly first class. Hope arrives in the form of world-renowned tenor Ifor Llewelyn, come home to Llanfair to rest, on doctor's orders.

Llewelyn immediately sets about renewing old friendships, and Mostyn even persuades him to sing with the choir. But Ifor isn't in Llanfair long before the residents decide that his presence is a mixed blessing. Noisy fights between Ifor and his wife, a threatening stranger, and Ifor's own warped sense of humor make life in Llanfair increasingly tense. When he announces that he is planning to write his memoir, telling all about his numerous relationships with famous and infamous women, he jokes that some people won't be happy. But is someone unhappy enough to commit murder to stop him? While tracking down a dangerous killer, Constable Evans also manages to navigate the treacherous waters of neighborhood rivalries, lusty barmaids, and local gossip.

With her third book in this acclaimed series, Rhys Bowen offers another pause-resisting tale of small-town mayhem and murder in Evanly Choirs.

Evanly Choirs (Audible Audio Edition) Rhys Bowen, Roger Clark, Audible Studios Books Reviews

Basically a British cosy with a Welsh setting and Welsh village stereotypes instead of English village stereotypes. Most of the humor derives from stereotyping and there's no great dialogue. Sort of Welsh Agatha Christie. Some of the detail is not authentic. The crown and the chair are different contests at the National Eisteddfod (the only one with a robed gorsedd of bards.) The crown is for free verse the chair is for cynghanedd. Ingenious plotting with no cheating. The clue is planted early on. No sex and minimal violence. As the Booklist blurb on the cover says "a perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day."
A h, the Welsh love of music is brought out in this story. Rhys Bowen does a good job bringing out the charms and weaknesses of her characters. A good read.
I enjoy this series. The characters are pleasant and the stories are able to hold my interest. I particularly like the descriptions of north Wales. Having once visited the area it brings back happy memories.

I just wish Bowen would settle him down with the school teacher.
I'm rereading this series for the third time -- Rhys Bowen created a wonderful set of characters in a charming setting in Wales and all through the series it is a joy to watch the characters grow as they encounter new problems to be overcome. I wish that Ms. Bowen's publishers hadn't made her stop this series, but at least when it ends it's in a good place. I hope they allow her to start it up again. These are all fun reads!
As usual, a grasping mystery-clean and cozy. Constable Evans does it again! This series stands tall among its genre. I have never been bored or disappointed with any book in this series. I recommend it highly, and fear that I will soon deplete the series. Life without the constable would be dreary. I love Wales! I'm heading there again very soon!
This author is superb in storytelling. The Evan series is always suspenseful and the settings are perfect. If you love a little musical backdrop and mystery then this book will bring much enjoyment.
The story starts out rather in her boiler plate manner our hero stays dazed and confused with girls vying for his attention, his colleagues in London look down on him but yet he always solves their cases for them, and then there is a double plot twist ending with a surprise villain. I most enjoy the character descriptions and her descriptions of the countryside. The plots have lost my interest, although I will occasionally read them.
The village choir is preparing for the annual competition, but is not doing well. Desperate, they rope Evan--the local constable--to sing with them. Reluctantly, he agrees, but soon all the attention goes to a prior resident of the village, a famous opera singer.
But on the evening preceding the contest, a death occurs that throws all into disarray, and Evan must once again use his attention to details to help solve the mystery.
This is a charming book--yes, I know that sounds like a weird thing to say about a murder mystery. But the characters are drawn with such depth that it feels charming. On the other hand, the plot is well paced, with an exciting climax. A wonderful, satisfying read.
